Unravelling the Cybersecurity Certification Conundrum: A Light-hearted Guide

Navigating the labyrinth of cybersecurity certifications can feel like trying to solve a Rubik’s cube blindfolded. With a myriad of options available, it’s like standing in front of a buffet table and not knowing where to start. But fear not, a recent YouTube video by a cybersecurity analyst, who’s been through the trenches, provides a handy roadmap. He ranks the certifications from S tier (the crème dae la crème) to F tier (the “thanks, but no thanks”).

Among the sea of acronyms, CompTIA Security+ emerges like a beacon in the fog, earning an A-tier ranking. It’s the popular kid in the class, widely recognised and frequently asked for in job listings. Priced at around £308, it’s like getting a designer dress at a thrift store price.

Next up, is the Offensive Security Certified Professional (OSCP), the black belt of cybersecurity certifications. It’s like the CrossFit of the cybersecurity world – intense, hands-on, and not for the faint-hearted. Starting at around £1260, it’s a bit of a splurge, but hey, it doesn’t expire. It’s the gift that keeps on giving!

The Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) is the Rolls Royce of cybersecurity certifications. It’s the golden ticket, earning an S-tier ranking. At £590, it’s a bit of a dent in the wallet, but it’s a small price to pay for the street cred it brings. Just remember, it requires a minimum of five years of work experience in two or more of its eight domains. It’s like the bouncer at the club, checking if you’re on the list.

The Cisco CCNA, while not a cybersecurity certification per sae, is like the reliable friend who’s always there for you. It’s ranked C-tier due to its wide use in networking jobs. It’s cheaper than the Network+ by about £50, making it the savvy shopper’s choice.

The Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), despite its high cost of around £945 and lack of respect in the cybersecurity community, still manages to sneak into the C-tier. It’s like the misunderstood rebel, not quite fitting in, but still getting an invite to the party.

The video also highlights the rising stars of the cybersecurity world – cloud security certifications. The Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge (CCSK) is the new kid on the block, earning an S-tier ranking. It’s like getting VIP access to the hottest club in town. The Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP), while more prestigious, is ranked A-tier due to its higher cost of around £470 and renewal requirements. It’s like the CCSK’s older, more high-maintenance sibling.

The video emphasises that while certifications can get you through the door, they don’t guarantee you’ll be the life of the party. They’re like a fancy suit – they can make you look good, but it’s your skills and experience that really make you shine. So, while the most desired cybersecurity certifications are those that are widely recognised, cover a broad range of topics, and provide practical knowledge, it’s not just about collecting certifications like they’re Pokémon cards. It’s about finding the right fit for your career goals, budget, and the specific demands of the job market. So, choose wisely, and may the odds be ever in your favour!
