Should TikTok be banned?

TikTok is a video-sharing application that has surprised the world. Users all over the world, particularly younger generations, have developed a tremendous amount of interest in the app. Notwithstanding, concerns have been raised about the well-being of the application, especially according to digital protection.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has been requested by the UK security minister, Tom Tugendhat, to investigate TikTok’s safety due to these concerns.

Concerns regarding the app’s handling of user data and its potential vulnerability to cyberattacks are growing.

The UK’s cyber security is the responsibility of the NCSC, a government agency. It is a component of the British intelligence agency GCHQ. The NCSC’s mission is to promote best practices in cyber security and assist in defending the UK from cyberattacks.

The UK government’s action is part of a global trend of governments investigating TikTok’s safety more closely. In the United States, where it has been alleged that the app shared user data with the Chinese government, the app has come under scrutiny. The app has been blocked in various ways by numerous countries, mostly on government-owned devices, these include, Belgium, Denmark, the USA and Canada, other countries including India, Taiwan, Pakistan and Afghanistan have taken a stronger approach to the bans banning the app for the public sector, however, most of these bans are temporary.

TikTok has stated that it takes the safety and security of its users very seriously and has denied any wrongdoing. According to the company, it has never given the Chinese government any user data and stores all user data outside of China. ByteDance which is the parent company of TikTok based in China, have stated that their employees can access TikTok data, Chinese businesses are required by national security laws to share access to the data they collect with the government upon request. recently TikTok has discussed separating from ByteDance to avoid bans within the U.S.

Those who are concerned about the app’s safety will be happy to hear about the NCSC’s investigation. However, it is important to note that the investigation is still in its infancy, and the NCSC’s conclusions cannot be predicted at this time.

In the interim, TikTok users ought to take measures to safeguard their data and privacy. This means being careful about what they share on the app, using strong passwords, and checking their privacy settings frequently.

In conclusion, it is encouraging that the UK government has asked the NCSC to investigate TikTok’s safety. The investigation will help to clarify the app’s security procedures and data management strategies for users. However, it is essential to keep in mind that TikTok users are also responsible for safeguarding their personal data and privacy. Users can contribute to ensuring that they can use the app safely and securely by taking precautions.
