An American football team has been hit with an attack in February by BlackByte now they have stated 20,000 social security numbers have been stolen.
Social Security numbers
Social security numbers are designed to identify U.S. citizens and allow them to be taxed correctly this is a highly protected piece of information. Determining what benefits individuals have is another aspect Social Security numbers handle.
Dangerous risks
Credit can be severely affected by an individual acquiring Social Security numbers having access to this detail allows credit account in their name and ruin their score and saddle the individual with debt. Another aspect that can be further exploited is general impersonating as the individual in many facets of account creation. Impersonation and identity theft can ruin the individuals life and often has trouble finding recourse.
Incident
The first part incident was recorded in February as a ransomware attack by BlackByte however as they have announced the 49ers have confirmed that personal data along with social security numbers were taken. According to some victims a flaw in Microsoft Exchange Server has enabled a way into their networks with actors moving across the network and escalating privileges.
