Easy Fixes for Personal Cyber Security

1. Patching

Managing and patching personal devices when new updates are released is a key part of ensuring security. It may be an inconvenience at the moment, but when these updates list what is being fixed, it makes it easier to attack a device. Often you will patch a laptop or desktop but for some reason, mobile devices including their apps are often overlooked and it’s a gateway for hackers.

2. Passwords/Pins

Mobile phone access is generally simplified with people opting for 1111 for example to speed up access. However, this is a flaw in your personal security once they are on your phone, they could have access to your authenticators, bank accounts and/or all forms of various information. Passwords are also overlooked in this form using the same password but with a number, variation is inherently riskier. My recommendation would be to look at using something such as bit warden the free version for personal use to manage strong passwords.

3. Social Media

Think before you post, hackers look out for users who post a lot of personal information online. Social engineering is talked about a lot, this is due to the effectiveness of the attacks. If you use pets or family for passwords, it can be an easy way to guess by checking your social media. It is good practice to restrict who can add and view your profile.

4. Router/Hub

Configure your home router password, there have been countless incidents where lists of predetermined passwords have been leaked. It is simple to change and easy to manage you just need to type your router IP address in your browser and you can process through changing the password. Click here to find out how.

Generally, a lot of these implementations are low effort and easy to do, make yourself a cuppa, get comfortable and change your router password, restrict your social media, and adjust your passwords and pins, this shouldn’t take more than an hour.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, so don’t worry about completing your patch management and personal posting on social media today, if you follow the advice above over time you will develop these new habits.
