Why Summer is often a great time for your Health and Safety audit

From a health and safety point of view, health and safety assessments should be at the forefront of business activities, but an audit, an independent, methodical and documented process, examines all aspects of health and safety. And summer just might be the perfect time to do it.

What is a health and safety audit?

Health and safety is no longer a tick box exercise and is certainly a lot more than half a day’s training. An audit is a process by which your business’s health and safety systems and procedures are measured against the criteria as laid down by health and safety regulations.

The importance of maintaining high standards of health and safety should never be underestimated. But is summer the right time for your business to invest in a health and safety audit?

Why the summer?

Choosing the right time for an audit is important. You want full, valuable feedback, but you also want to be able to dedicate resources needed to get the full picture of how well your business deals with health and safety. Just as important is understanding where improvements need to be made, how to make them and, of course, to prioritise your actions.

Is it your busy or quiet time?

For some businesses, summer is their main trading period but for others, it is the quiet before the ‘storm’ that is the festive season.

  • Quiet time – it provides the chance for health and safety auditors to delve deeply into all process and procedures, and you have more availability and resources to dedicate to the audit too.
  • Busy time – there is no reason why a health and safety audit cannot be carried out at your busiest time, but you’ll need to ensure adequate resources are applied. In some ways, an audit at this time will give you valuable oversight of health and safety in your business.

Staff holidays & shortages

As soon as the summer months arrive, the holiday rota is stacked full of employees taking a well-earned break. But for every business, this presents a unique set of health and safety implications. How do you train temporary staff? Is training adequate and in line with current regulations?

A health and safety audit in the summer can present an eye-opening overview of just how well (or not) your business stays in line with health and safety laws and guidelines. For some businesses, it can be a wake-up call that the summer poses not just significant operational issues but health and safety ones too.

Are changes in your business over summer temporary or permanent?

How are they affecting health and safety? Your business will change as your customers change, your products change and as technology impacts on what you do and how you do it. And thus, the nature of your business changes and for many, this process starts in the summer.

So, the question is, are these changes temporary or permanent and what is the impact on health and safety?
