The importance of cross training your staff

The key to success in business lies within the workforce, and a company is only as good as its employees. Providing staff with high quality training across all departments and for different roles within the workplace allows you to maximise the benefits of your employees. There are many benefits of training a workforce to be competent and capable at several positions within one workplace, including cost effectiveness, ease of filling positions and efficiently handling busy periods to name a few. Let’s take a closer look at some of the larger benefits of cross training your workforce, and how it can benefits your business’s overall success.

Employee Proficiency

Training staff for a variety of different roles in the workplace leads to more capable and well- rounded employees that are able to perform a range of duties and handle a variety of responsibilities as needed, to keep things running smoothly and effectively within the workplace. Cross training employees means that everybody working for you understands the entire business process from start to finish and can contribute to each stage of the process.

Cost Effectiveness

Having well trained, diverse employees means considerable cost savings for business owners as it helps the employees already working there to develop and improve skills instead of recruiting new bodies to fill positions. Reassigning roles and responsibilities amongst workers is far less costly than recruiting, hiring and the initial training of new ones, and is particularly effective within smaller businesses.

Replacement Workers

By providing employees with complete cross training in all facets of the business operations performance levels and production rates are never in jeopardy, even in the event of absent employees. Factors such as illness and holidays don’t impede the flow of business because other employees are able to jump into the role and get the job done.

This factor can be listed under cost effectiveness as well because temporary workers are very costly and are inadequately trained often times to perform at par.

Employee Morale

Providing quality cross training will also have a positive effect on employee morale because workers will feel confident in the job they are doing, as well as the security of their position within the company. Providing training and developing your employees’ skills is a form of recognition that will make staff feel valued and appreciated. When employees feel as though their employers have a general interest in the staff member they feel more job satisfaction and strive to perform better. Employees with good morale work harder, are more productive and stay longer periods of time with the business they are working for.

Developing good training procedures, as well as providing well written and accurate manuals for employees to reference is critical in providing high quality and effective cross training, and Synergos can help to assess your processes and systems, making sure you are running as efficiently and productively as possible, in turn making it even easier to properly train all employees on a variety of positions. Completed my Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in 2012 I was looking to start my own business. With over 10 years improving and streamlining business systems, I grasped an opportunity to assist a local business to improve their quality and communication processes by researching the requirements of a quality management system based upon ISO 9001 and conducted my first internal audit that resulted in 97 improvement recommendations. After a successful outcome, I was recommended again and again with glowing reviews and in February 2014, Synergos Consultancy was born. I now have the role of regularly reviewing and planning the strategic direction of the business to ensure that Synergos continues to develop, whilst at the same time, still actively working closely with some of our clients. In my spare time I love to attend the theatre to watch musicals, dance productions and plays. In 2019, I attended the theatre a whopping 24 times. I follow a plant-based diet which I absolutely love. A keen tick-tock follower, I have picked up a lot of interesting recipes. A firm favourite is Brussel sprouts and sriracha sauce baked in the oven. Delicious!
