The United Nations (UN) development of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is an ambitious 15-year plan to address some of the most pressing issues presented in countries across the globe but how can ISO 14001 Environmental Management System help in reaching these lofty goals?
ISOs have long been about establishing an international standard in key business areas and with this ethic at its heart, it’s no wonder that many people think companies who subscribe to ISOs are playing an important role not just in the society of their own country but in others across the world.
Economic, environmental and society are three dimensions at the heart of each and every ISO but in the case of UN SDGs, ISO 14001 is just one of 97 ISOs identified as being able to support and further the challenge laid down in the UN’s plan.
By supporting our members to maximize the benefits of international standardization and ensure the uptake of ISO standards, we’re helping to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Economic, environmental and societal dimensions are all directly addressed by ISO standards. Organizations and companies looking to contribute to the SDGs will find that International Standards provide effective tools to help them rise to the challenge.
The 17 Goals to Transform Our World aims to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and bring about peace and prosperity for everyone. The plan calls on everyone to make a contribution including industry and consumers too.
There are 17 areas covered in the plan including life on land, life below water and clean water and sanitation to name just three and there is one to which ISO 14001 could specifically relate: goal 13 Climate Action.
The dangers of climate change
The dangers of climate change have already been identified and are now affecting every country in the world. It is and will continue to disrupt lives, challenge economies and growth and is costing lives too, a heavy penalty to pay for not looking after our planet and its natural resources better.
There are changes being made but the pace of change is slow – too slow say experts – to make a significant dent on reversing the effects of climate change but we still need to persevere and that is why organisations from all industries are taking their impact on the climate more seriously.
However it isn’t just about identifying how we damage the environment but how we can start to reverse our impact. ISO 14001 has been identified by the International Standards Organization as being a significant tool in slowing and possibly reversing climate change.
As an organisation, ISO 14001 will cast a spotlight on all areas of your business and how the smallest of changes can have the biggest impact on climate change, especially if you continue to make changes and advances in practice and policy.
A family of standards
ISO 14000 is a family of standards addressing environmental management systems with ISO 14001 providing a framework for key aspects of monitoring and taking action to reduce harmful practices and be a catalyst for change, something that contributes directly to this ambitious plan.
