Common misconceptions about AEO

Like many schemes and accreditations, myths and misconceptions circle around AEO status. Linked heavily to Brexit among other things, AEO can deliver benefits for exporters and importers, no matter their size. But what is holding people back from exploring AEO further?

1 AEO won’t count for anything after Brexit

With an extension until October 31st 2019, UK businesses have a few more months to prepare for business post-Brexit. Some people believe that once we have left the EU, AEO status won’t count for much with EU or global trading partners.

Unfortunately, we still don’t really know what shape and form the business landscape will take once we have left the EU, but AEO status clearly shows global and EU trading partners that an exporting or importing business has strong supply chains and robust procedures that protects its business in the UK and abroad.

2 AEO guarantees trade post-Brexit

There are no guarantees. Trade deals are yet to be struck. In such uncertain times, it is easy to latch onto schemes such as AEO as offering the guarantees that we look for to make sure we come out of something unscathed and in great shape.

Experts believe that AEO status pre and post Brexit sends an important message. But there are no guarantees.

3 It is time-consuming and expensive

Many businesses have been reluctant to apply for AEO status for one or two reasons;

  1. Time-consuming – many businesses believe that the AEO application process is long and time consuming. At a time when businesses have so many other things to focus on, they feel they can ill-afford to spend so much time on applying for AEO.
  2. Expensive – many businesses also believe that the process places an unacceptable pressure on resources, budgets included. With the right information, support and guidance, this is not the case.

4 It’s easy to get it wrong

Compared to other EU countries, such as Germany, the rate of applications for AEO status in the UK is low. There are many reasons why this is the case, but one could be that applications are turned down for either lacking evidence or being incomplete.

This has caused the misconception to circulate that applying for and being successful in acquiring AEO status is hard, and that it is easy to fall foul of the stringent guidelines and rules.

With help and support, the AEO application process need not be difficult. In fact, with an independent and experienced consultancy working with you on AEO, businesses will find the process much smoother.

5 It’s far too complicated…

… and with no guarantees, many UK businesses think that applying for AEO status is simply too much hassle and too much effort for very little in return.

This is a misconception. AEO is not complicated but it does take commitment and understanding to make a successful application. Working with the experienced team at Synergos Consultancy, we can translate the AEO application process so that the outcome for your company is what you want and need it to be: AEO status.
