Benefits of ISO 9001: 2015 to Manufacturing Industry

Manufacturing in the UK accounts for 10% of the economy and with crippling competition from other countries, British manufacturers need to be able to compete on the international stage. There are many ways to do this but ISOs can hold the key to a leaner, more responsive business. But how does ISO 9001 specifically benefit the manufacturing industry?

What is ISO9001:2015?

This standard relates specifically to quality standards, an important consideration in any business and industry. What it demonstrates is that an organisation is customer-focused and committed to delivering consistently high-quality products and services. It is a globally recognised standard that shows an organisation has systems in place to drive efficiency and continual improvement.

The latest update to the standard happened in 2015.

The benefits of ISO for a manufacturing business

1. Improved cost-efficiencies

Topping the list of benefits must surely be the continuous drive to improve cost-efficiencies. For manufacturing businesses in particular, the cost of production is one that is constantly monitored and where savings can be made, action is usually taken.

However, producing items at cheaper cost shouldn’t be to the detriment of its quality. With ISO 9001 driving improvements in quality across the board, doesn’t every manufacturer welcome the possibility of reducing costs and increasing profit?

2. Better credibility and heightened competitiveness

In such a competitive field, standing out is hard to do but it isn’t impossible. Excellent prices and great products are clearly key but with ISO 9001, you show trade partners that you have the means by which to drive and improve quality. In many cases, clients are willing to pay extra if they get the quality product that will directly improve what they do and offer their customers.

3. Effective use of resources

Cost and speed of production are directly affected by resources and their availability. What also affects manufacturing costs is waste. Improved use and allocation of resources has an impact on the business as a whole but also on quality.

4. Potentially increases market share

For a manufacturing business, its reputation is only as good as the last product manufactured and delivered. Quality is the driver behind repeat business and new business too.

There is no time in today’s economy when a British manufacturer can sit back and become complacent. Driving growth means driving market share and with quality certification like ISO 9001, you have an important accelerator for growth.

5. A more responsive organisation

When something does go wrong, as it will from time to time, how does your organisation respond, and how quickly? ISO 9001 has many strands to it, one of which is to improve flexibility and responsiveness.

Manufacturing is no longer the grumbling beast it once was. IT and other technologies have streamlined many processes but there are those who say that it has done so at the expense of quality.

ISO 9001 could help to balance the books and drive growth, as well as showcase your abilities to provide high-quality products at a competitive price point.

Completed my Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in 2012 I was looking to start my own business. With over 10 years improving and streamlining business systems, I grasped an opportunity to assist a local business to improve their quality and communication processes by researching the requirements of a quality management system based upon ISO 9001 and conducted my first internal audit that resulted in 97 improvement recommendations. After a successful outcome, I was recommended again and again with glowing reviews and in February 2014, Synergos Consultancy was born. I now have the role of regularly reviewing and planning the strategic direction of the business to ensure that Synergos continues to develop, whilst at the same time, still actively working closely with some of our clients. In my spare time I love to attend the theatre to watch musicals, dance productions and plays. In 2019, I attended the theatre a whopping 24 times. I follow a plant-based diet which I absolutely love. A keen tick-tock follower, I have picked up a lot of interesting recipes. A firm favourite is Brussel sprouts and sriracha sauce baked in the oven. Delicious!
