4 Things business owners don’t have time for – And how to successfully outsource them

Most business owners juggle lots of metaphorical balls and keeping those balls in the air is tricky at the best of times. It’s best to only juggle a manageable number – or most of them will be dropped. Leaving the extended metaphor, consider your company’s operational functions. Are you really the right person to manage your IT systems? Are you actually a certified accountant? Are PR and marketing your forte? You may well be able to effectively manage many processes, but it’s best to play to your strengths and not waste time and potentially money or reputation – on aspects that would be better outsourced.

An area where only experts will do. IT is the company’s control centre and if it goes down, so does your business – so it’s imperative that you have an effective cloud-based ‘back up’, robust security and anti-virus and a team of techies who can sort issues out as quickly as humanly possible – and indeed prevent those issues from occurring from the start. Choose a local IT specialist who can be on-hand physically as well as via a helpline.

 

Recruitment.

Companies have been outsourcing this since before it was called ‘outsourcing’, with office recruiter Kelly being established in 1946. In order to invest in your business you must invest in people but it’s such a long, drawn-out procedure, which costs a fortune in advertising and time, and again the perils of making a mistake are legion. Find a dedicated and regulated consultancy to take care of everything, sourcing candidates to your exact specification, referencing and verifying qualifications and abilities.

Artwork and Design.

A very specialist function, incorporating logo and branding, letterheads and business cards – everything that gives the first impression (and it’s a truth universally acknowledged that you never get a second chance to make a first impression). Many early-days business owners may think this is easy, or worse, unimportant but they will soon learn. It needs to be professional and slick as well as appropriately eye-catching therefore it needs a skilled expert.   Ideally research local and successful advertising agencies, asking to see current campaigns and portfolios.   In order to succeed, you will no doubt require that function too.

Health and Safety.  

Many businesses now see the sense in outsourcing Health & Safety, as the legislation is so far-reaching and such a minefield, even without such specialist sub-sections as COSHH or Working at Height… Plus, as your company grows, you’ll be required to have your own Health and Safety Policy. Make mistakes and risk your workforce – ultimately your business.
