Being part of the CHAS scheme has benefits to contractors and those looking to contract them, in the sense that suppliers can show compliance in HSE. When the compliance is achieved, a supplier is in a way pre-approved for work for the buyers (some buyers may automatically look for the ‘accredited’ status). Hiring CHAS accredited contractors also save those arranging projects, as they will know immediately that health and safety requirements are met, without having to go through lengthy question and answer sessions as part of tender processes.
As much as many businesses prefer to do everything in house, when it comes to making complex applications to be certified in certain areas of their operation, it’s wise to get in a consultant that knows the process inside out. However, choosing the right consultant isn’t always easy. They must be easy to work with, understand your business inside out and be able to educate you as to why the relevant processes need to be put in place, as well as helping you fill in the relevant application forms. Education should be part of the process, as having a Consultant on board means just that. They are ‘consulting’ and are the expert in the process, but it is essential to remember that it is the supplier making the application. So the applicant must be aware at all times of the current situation of that application; and be prepared for communication with CHAS directly should the need arise. A good consultant will encourage and facilitate this, leaving applicants in a position where they fully understand their role and responsibilities pertaining to the process.
How to choose your CHAS consultant?
It has been widely reported that CHAS are irritated by the number of consultants that provide ‘desk based’ support to applicants. This is a practice that happens all too often, and these desk bound consultants often overlook vital factors when helping businesses apply for CHAS certification. However, this is not the only thing you need to think about when you make a choice about which consultant to use. One that works with UKAS to ensure standards are not only met, but exceeded would be a good idea, as there are some people out there that market themselves as ‘consultants’ without any professional qualifications. But most importantly, it’s essential you find a consultant you can trust will take your application seriously – as certification could take your business to the next level.
